How to Tune your Violin with a Tuning Fork (Advanced)

by | Jan 7, 2019 | Maintenance | 2 comments

The most accurate way to tune your violin, is to use an old fashioned tuning fork

Avoid the well tempered tuning of a tuner or app

Get some ear training along the way

In the video I show you exactly how you can do it too

A tuning fork gives the pitch of the A string. You hit it on a table and hold it next to your hear, so you can clearly hear the pitch.

After this you compare your A string and tune it, so the pitch matches the note A you heard from the tuning fork.

In order to do this, you must be able to tune and bow at the same time. This requires some practice.

You tune the other strings based on the A string that now has the right pitch

You play two strings at the same time and listen if there’s a perfect fifth. If not, you adjust it. It takes some practice to hear if the fifth between the strings is in tune. That’s why, as a beginner violinist, it might be easier to start tuning with an electronic tuner. Click here to watch my tutorial video about that.

    Hi Zalta,
I found one of my violin peg sometimes a bit of stuck, and one of them has the problem to slip off if I try to lose it more…..do you have any video about this issue? or any solution for it?
    Thank you.
