3 Violin practice strategies to get better on the violin

even if you have just snippets of time to spend and are distracted by kids, pets or family members

As a professional violinist I practice and work from home with my 7 month old twin babies.

It can seem impossible to get some quality practice done at first, but with these practice strategies you can get really handy at it!

#1 Be sure to know EXACTLY what to practice

Don’t waste your time thinking about what you’ll do. That snippet of time you have might be gone before you know it.

Have different scenarios in mind: what will you do if you have as little as 10 minutes and what if you have three hours?

What is the 20% of your extensive practice session that gets you 80% of the results?

For me I’d like to do my scale practice in all keys and my bow technique practice. That takes half an hour to an hour and at least keeps my technique in good condition.

#2 Music is also a form of attention! (and a nice one)

If your babies ask for attention, give them music!

When your babies can’t do without you, learn a difficult run by heart and practice that while looking at them. If you have several difficult runs in your head, it’s easy to get some quality practice done in this way.

Babies really don’t mind that you’re playing that same run over and over again ;).

The Stokke Tripp Trapp chair with a Newborn Set (and soon Baby Set) is my lifesaver as a twin mom and violinist. It allows me to play for my babies.

#3 Listen to recordings while feeding

Listening, listening, listening… a very important aspect of practicing that is often overlooked. You’re not only practicing if you have your violin under your chin.

I have a YouTube playlist with different recordings of all the pieces that I currently study. When I feed my kids I play this music.

It’s certainly possible to have your sheet music at hand and make notes, but keep it safe and keep giving your babies enough love and attention.

What’s YOUR best violin practice strategy as a parent or caregiver?
